I have yarn/books/supplies, may I donate it to Seattle Knitters Guild?
As a guild, we DO NOT TAKE AND CANNOT ACCEPT DONATIONS of yarn, books, notions, or any related supplies. Although we host our meetings at Wedgewood Presbyterian, we don’t have an office or storage there or elsewhere. DO NOT LEAVE DONATIONS AT WEDGWOOD PRESBYTERIAN. They kindly host us and do not have the resources to handle items that have been left behind. Any supplies abandoned at Wedgwood Presbyterian will be discarded in the trash. There are many places in and around the Seattle area where you can donate your yarn, books, notions, and related supplies. We encourage you to donate to the following groups and creative reuse stores:
You are also welcome to post on our Facebook group SKGpliedtogether to offer your yarn/books/supplies to interested members. I reached out to the guild via the contact form more than 5 days ago and still haven’t received a reply. When can I expect a reply? We’re trying our best to reply to inquiries within 3-5 days, but if more than 5 days have passed, your message has probably gotten lost in the shuffle of the many emails we receive. Please feel free to resubmit the contact form to give us a reminder that we need to get back to you! When and where are meetings held? Generally, meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month. Doors are unlocked/Zoom call opens at 6:30 pm Pacific for social knitting; meeting starts at 7 pm Pacific. In Person meeting location, when applicable: Wedgwood Presbyterian Church 8008 35th Avenue NE Seattle, WA 98115 (Northeast corner of 35th & 80th) Parking available in the lot behind the church or across the street on the south side of the church on 80th. Also accessible via King County Metro bus route 65. Virtual/Hybrid meetings, when applicable, are held via Zoom. Can anyone attend a guild meeting? No, you must be a current member in order to attend guild meetings. Access to our live Zoom meetings requires a password provided to members via an email sent the week of the meeting. Attending our meetings in person requires that you check in at the door. We depend on membership fees to cover our speaker fees and other guild and meeting expenses. Current members are welcome to bring an interested guest with them to one meeting, but we ask that members bring no more than 1 guest at a time because of the limited size of our meeting space. If you don’t know a current member but you’re interested in attending a guild meeting before committing to membership, please email [email protected] at least 2 weeks prior to the meeting to ensure that there will be space for you. Our summer Ice Cream Social meeting and our winter Holiday Party meeting may not have the space to accommodate non-members. I want to join the guild, but I can’t afford the $30 membership fee. What should I do? We understand that times are tight and you may not be able to afford our membership fee. If you’re a student, under the age of 25, or otherwise unable to afford the fee, we offer a discounted membership option for $15, no questions asked. If you’re unable to afford the $15 fee, please email [email protected] to inquire about the availability of membership scholarships. Knitting is for everyone and so is the Seattle Knitters Guild. I want to help make sure that anyone who wants to join the guild can do so. What should I do? When you join the guild for the first time and when you renew your yearly membership, you’ll see an option to add an additional monetary donation to your transaction on Square. Whether you can donate $5, $50, or even more, your donation will go towards improving the guild experience and helping us offer membership scholarships. I love the guild and I think the membership fee is too low for the value that I get from it! Will the guild charge more to reflect this? We are flattered that you feel this way! However, our current membership pricing structure aims to make sure that membership is accessible to everyone. If you would really like to contribute more, we do accept donations via Square on the membership tab of our website. I’m a member of the guild and I want to get more involved, but I’m not sure how. What should I do? We’d love to have you in whatever way you can help! You can log into the members-only section of our website using the current password (found in our Monthly Meeting Reminder emails and your most recent email receipt for membership) and look at our “How to Get Involved” page. That’s where we list out our current needs/wants and the appropriate board member for you to contact. If you’re interested in doing something that’s not listed on that page, you can submit a contact entry form to let us know what you’re thinking, and we’ll connect you with the relevant board member. I don’t knit, but I do crochet/spin/weave/do something else with fiber. Can I still join the guild? Yes, you can! You don’t have to knit to be a part of the guild. Many of us also crochet, spin, weave, felt, tat, nalbind, dye, and more. Speakers at our meetings often focus on knitting, but knitting is by no means the only fiber art covered in our meeting topics. Does the guild offer knitting classes? We don’t offer structured classes of any kind, though some of our meetings do have a teaching component. From time to time, we hold “learn to knit” groups sponsored by the guild at various locations, but those are more of a support group to get you pointed in the right direction or to help you remember how to knit after a long time away. We recommend reaching out to your local yarn store for class availability. Some of our sponsors do offer classes (in person and/or virtually). You are also welcome to post on our Facebook group SKGpliedtogether to ask our members for class recommendations. I would like to knit for charity (homeless, preemies, etc). Do you know of organizations who accept donations of knitted items? The list of charity knitting opportunities is long and ever-changing. Some charities have one-time events with deadlines while others have ongoing drives that continuously accept donations. Your best bet is to search online for knitting charities in your area or with your local yarn store; many of our sponsors have information about charities they are crafting for. We have a separate page listing the charity knitting that some of our sponsors participate in which is a good place to start. I am looking for someone to REPAIR a knitted item. Is there someone in the guild who can do that? Our guild is not an appropriate place to find someone who can repair your knitted item(s). If you would like to learn to repair knitwear on your own, you can start with this article from Knitty magazine that covers basic repair techniques: https://knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATrepairs101.html. If you aren’t interested in learning how to repair knitwear yourself, we suggest that you visit your closest local yarn shop and ask their employees whether they can point you towards a local knitter willing to do repairs. I am looking for someone to FINISH KNITTING an item that a friend/family member/loved one was unable to finish in their lifetime. Is there someone in the guild who can finish it for me? It’s not uncommon for fiber artists of all kinds to have unfinished projects, whether those projects were actively in-progress or had been sitting in storage waiting to be revisited. Our guild doesn’t offer finishing services for knitting or other fiber arts projects, but we encourage you to visit the Loose Ends project, which matches volunteer finishers with projects needing to be finished: looseends.org. Loose Ends is locally founded, but their reach is global and they match projects to finishers around the world. I am looking for someone to KNIT AN ITEM FROM START TO FINISH for me. Is there someone in the guild who can do that for me? Our guild is not an appropriate place to find someone to custom knit an item for you. You may be able to find someone willing to do so at your local yarn shop or online. Please note that requests for custom knit items are not permitted in our Facebook group and will not be approved.
