Guidelines

The only requirement for membership in the Seattle Basket of SocksKnitters Guild is the enjoyment of knitting. Our members are of all experience levels and the Guild welcomes all knitters!

Members are encouraged to find new friends and the Guild is happy to provide the means (through the website, Cablegram and Ravelry Group) for smaller knitting groups to form in the Seattle area. If you would like to start a smaller, less formal group, please contact our Newsletter Editor. Notices of new groups or groups looking for members will appear in the Cablegram.

Monthly Meetings
Here’s what you can expect at a regular meeting:

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Librarian will have the library cart open for business. Paid members in good standing may check out books. The Membership Chair or another Board member will be at the entrance to answer any questions you may have, or if you wish to join, you will find information on the front table.

The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m.

The presentation is followed by a short break of 15 or 20 minutes and then Show and Tell commences. Members and guests are invited to bring and show knit items they have completed. Everyone is inspired by this exchange of sharing!

Local Yarn Shops are encouraged to bring flyers and class schedules to our meetings, and if they do, you will find these written materials on the front table.

During the calendar year the Program Co-Chairs work hard to present a variety of topics and speakers, between annual events. These are:

Fiber Frenzy. Each year at one meeting we have the “frenzy” – members bring yarn, knitting supplies and materials to sell or trade. This is a great way to pick up new stash, or unload items you just don’t think you’ll ever use.

Fashion Show. Each year at one meeting the Guild sponsors a Fashion Show, usually based on a theme (men’s knits, lace, socks, sweaters, one-skein wonders). Members are encouraged to bring items they have knit that complement the theme, regardless of how long ago it was knit.

Mini-Classes. Each year at one meeting the Guild invites or hires local teachers, some of whom are Guild members, to teach a “mini-workshop”. Past instruction topics include needle felting, casting on, continental knitting, magic loop, short rows, seaming and Fair Isle knitting. These short (45 minute) workshops are a great way to pick up new techniques.

Holiday Party. Each December is the annual holiday party. The Guild provides coffee and tea and members bring potluck items for a grand holiday celebration! The Guild also secures door prizes and purchases gift certificates from Local Yarn Shops to raffle!

You will find a list of upcoming meeting topics under Events.

Ravelry
The Seattle Knitters Guild has a group on Ravelry. You are welcome to join and contribute to the discussion threads or add pictures of your completed garments.

Dues
Membership dues are $22 per year if you join anytime between January and June. If you join in July or later, the cost of membership is $11.

Your membership dues pay for our rent at the Church, the cost of maintaining the website, the cost of publishing and mailing the newsletter, purchase of library books and DVDs, and the cost of speakers and hospitality items. Our Board members serve on a volunteer basis.
